Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation her school, she went to Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. She wanted to be an high school English teacher. She was unable to fulfill her dream, however, when after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. She started her career performing live poems and writing her own material. In the end, she teamed up together with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. Through the Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She also gained experience as an actor on The Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
